About Mexic-Arte Museum:

Mexic-Arte Museum is a non-profit organization dedicated to the presentation and interpretation of Mexican, Mexican American, and Latinx art and culture. Through the exhibition of traditional and contemporary artwork, the museum offers visitors an opportunity to engage with and learn about the history and artistic production of these multifaceted cultures. In addition to the museum visitors, a broader audience is impacted through the museum's outreach classes, tours, lectures, and other educational programming.

Scope: The Education Curator provides leadership, guidance and management oversight of the museum’s educational programming and the Museum’s internship program. They oversee daily and long-range operations of education development including tours and programs, outreach and community engagement. In addition, the Education Curator works collaboratively with the Curator and Director of Programs to develop exhibit related programming and activities.

Reporting Relationship: The Education Curator reports to the Executive Director.

Key Partners: The Education Curator works as a member of the Education Department three-member Team in partnership with interns and allied professionals. The Education Curator is also a member of the Museum’s exhibits/program team. In addition, the Education Curator maintains ongoing relationships with educational partners and allied professionals.

 

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Exhibition & Programs

● The Education Curator works as the liaison to the Curatorial Department, participating on the exhibits and program team to provide input during the development of exhibitions, and development of educational components as they relate to exhibitions and special projects.

● The Education Curator translates written material for exhibitions and educational material from English to Spanish. Excellent Spanish language and written language skills required.

● The Education Curator directs and coordinates a rich and broad-based education program that addresses the museum’s mission and the education mission. This includes:

- The development, research and implementation of innovative educational programming for broad and diverse audiences presented in various formats at the Museum. These include, but are not limited to tours, family activities, adult programs, lectures, panel discussion and workshops.

- Joint development of education workshops and programs for the public and teachers including family days, media mixers and career days.

- Joint development of educational materials. These may include, but are not limited to, educators' guides, gallery guides, and more.

Internship Coordination

● Manages and oversees the internship program including all reporting and evaluations

● Ensures the internship program provides Interns with an experience that will prepare them to be competent, well-rounded, entry-level museum professionals with competencies enabling them to work in a community-based setting providing practices and services.

● Actively ensures the Internship Program provides students with an opportunity to integrate the knowledge and skills acquired in their programs.

● Serves as liaison between universities and the Mexic-Arte Museum.

● Leads all aspects of the internship recruitment process including screening, enrollment, orientation and other forms of support necessary to prepare students to participate in the internship program.

● Provides active leadership to the Internship Program (staff and interns) through supervision and reviews, consultation, training and support in accordance with the museum’s values and guidelines.

● Maintains and updates internship program information including the handbook as necessary.

● Proactively evaluates individual and overall program performance on a regular and ongoing basis; using collected data and information to make needed improvements.

● Prepares intern employee payments.

  Education Programs

● Provides leadership and guidance of the museum’s educational program to create innovative programs that respond to the museum’s mission statement and strategic goals as well as specific exhibitions.

● Assists in the planning of school programs based on exhibitions and partnerships including the development of relationships with teachers and schools.

● Assists in curriculum development related to exhibitions for art education outreach programming for K-12 students in Austin area schools and for young museum visitors.

● Assist with the implementation of tours, Family Days, summer camp exhibit, artist workshops in the schools,

Other Responsibilities

· Assist in all collective event activities, including special events and staffing, and other duties as assigned.

· Participates in professional organizations and must be able to work

collaboratively with diverse types of people including staff and other professionals.

· Track and generate required grant deliverables for assigned grants, including completing reports and maintaining files.

· Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of responsibility and requirements of the position.

 

Educational and Experience Preparation:

Requires Bachelors or master’s in art history, arts education, museum studies, or other related areas with working knowledge of modern and contemporary art, Latinx art; one or more years professional experience in arts education including curriculum and program design; excellent organizational and computer skills; ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others. 

Requirements for Qualification:

● Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish

● Extensive knowledge of Lainx, Latin American art, history & culture

● Must be Bilingual: Spanish / English in the spoken and written language

● Ability to obtain Texas Background Check approval, Valid TX Drivers license, and reliable transportation

● Must be able to work on site at the Museum Monday-Thursday 9am-6pm Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

● Effective time management, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

● Ability to multitask.

Compensation: This is a full-time in-person salaried position, including partial healthcare insurance opportunities. Some additional evening and weekend hours for programs are required. Salary is $52,000 per year.
