Job Description

Haitian Creole Community Advocate

Purpose:

  • Ensure that all students and families feel connected to and part of the Blueberry Harvest School (BHS) community and that all BHS programming and services represent the languages, cultures, and values of students and families.

Outcomes:

  • Students attending the BHS receive instructional and support services during the blueberry harvest.
  • Families understand what supports are available at the school site and in camps.
  • All students experience learning opportunities where they feel welcome, supported, and connected to others.
  • All eligible students (infant-20), including Out-of-School Youth, are enrolled in the Migrant Education Program (MEP) and receive instructional and support services during the blueberry harvest.
  • All families in camps have access to resources and services that meet their basic needs.
  • Families feel part of the Blueberry Harvest School and believe their language, culture, and values are reflected in the programming and values of the Blueberry Harvest School.
  • Families and students feel that their feedback is taken into consideration and incorporated into BHS programming. 

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the School Coordinator and Community Advocacy & Outreach Coordinator to ensure that students and families are connected to all supports that are available at the BHS.
  • Welcome families upon arrival for the Blueberry season, and provide them with information about resources and services available.
  • Complete enrollment forms at school or camps as needed. Connect families with Community Advocates as necessary.
  • Collect and compile parent and student feedback from each camp with School Coordinator and Community Advocacy & Outreach Coordinator.
  • Assist with school and camp events including field trips, welcoming resources fairs, camp activities, etc. 
  • During the evenings, be present at camps to act as a liaison between community advocates and families in the camps.
  • Connect regularly with parents and caregivers to: ensure that students are able to access services available during the program; share information about their child's experience at the BHS; facilitate parent engagement at the school; and gather program feedback.
  • Connect regularly with a caseload of families and ensure families have access to resources and services to meet their basic needs; connect families to support services through referrals to partner agencies.
  • Support interpretation and transportation needs at the school or in camps, as needed.
  • Share staff responsibilities during evening events including school events.

Collaboration and Supervision:

The Community Advocate receives regular support and feedback from their supervisor: Community Advocacy & Outreach Coordinator, Leslie Monroy & Eva Valencia

  • *Note: Mano en Mano values the perspectives all staff bring to their roles, and expects that collaboration, support, and feedback can be shared between staff in any different roles.

The Community Advocate collaborates with staff in the following roles: BHS School Coordinator, BHS Operations Coordinator, Community Advocacy and Outreach Coordinator, and Health and Wellness Coordinator. 

  • The Community Advocate connects with the BHS School Coordinator as needed, to ensure that student needs are being met at the school site and with Community Advocacy & Outreach Coordinator to ensure that student needs are being met at the campsite.
  • The Community Advocate connects with the Community Advocacy and Outreach Coordinator during planning meetings to ensure students are being enrolled in the program and their needs are being met and coordinate scheduling and plans for outreach and advocacy activities.
  • Community Advocate connects with Community Advocacy and Outreach Coordinator throughout the day to share responsibilities for outreach, and services.

The Community Advocate does not supervise staff in any other roles.

Important Deadlines/Timeline and Compliance Expectations:

  • Complete enrollment forms according to timeline as determined by Community Advocacy & Outreach Coordinator.
  • Share support services provided to students and families in-camps to Community Advocates.
  • Complete Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) for any students ages 3-5 not yet in Kindergarten, and document results
  • Complete family feedback forms with parents and caregivers and submit

Qualifications and Hiring Information:

  • Values: Must demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to Mano en Mano's mission and vision. Ideal candidates for this position will demonstrate experience that reflects a commitment to equity and social justice.
  • Experience: Four years of experience demonstrating a range of skills relevant to health and wellness and/or community organizing. Preference for applicants with experience working with highly mobile students and understanding of trauma-informed practices
  • Language: Must be fluent in English AND Haitian Creole.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree or higher. Two or more years of equivalent work experience may be considered.
  • Physical Requirements: none
  • Pay Range: $23.75 - 27.75 per hour, based on BHS experience and language fluency.
  • Start/End Date: Tuesday, July 23rd - Friday, August 16th
  • Expected Hours (Full Time): 
    • PD Week: Tuesday, July 23rd - Friday July 26th; 8:00AM-4:00PM
    • School in-session : Monday, July 29th - Friday, August 16th; 12:00PM-8:00PM, Monday - Friday, with flexible hours as needed
    • *Note: The Community Advocate will spend time at the BHS school site as well as in migrant housing camps throughout Washington and Hancock counties, with a schedule determined based on program needs.
