I. Major Responsibilities:

1. Responsible for translating documents from English to target languages system-wide for UMass Memorial.
2. Ensures meaning and context of the material are maintained, and converts it into a second language, making sure to preserve the original meaning.
3. Creates glossaries or term dictionaries.
4. Proofreads and edits documents translated by external translation companies to ensure grammatically correct and true translations of the original documents. Gives final approval after graphic design team has laid out documents.
5. Consults with subject matter experts and other colleagues to understand specialized concepts and translate them appropriately.
6. Facilitates successful delivery of services to linguistically diverse consumers.
7. Explains hospital resources, office protocols, and limitations to clinicians and patients; make appropriate referrals; serve as a cultural and linguistic resource to both patients and providers to contribute to successful outcomes.
8. Provides interpreting services with accuracy to patients with Limited English Language proficiency (LEP) and providers either personally or by telephone or scheduled and on assigned call hours.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Bachelor’s Degree in Linguistics and/or Translation and Interpreting Studies, or minimum of two years’ experience in the field of medical translations.
Preferred:
1. American Translators Association (ATA) certification.

Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Exceptional fluency in English and the target language, both oral and written.
2. Strong understanding of grammar.
3. Solid knowledge of Medical Terminology in at least two languages.
4. Strong organizational, attention to detail, and interpersonal communication skills.
5. Demonstrate proficiency in use of keyboard/typing using word processing and spreadsheet software (speed and accuracy). Experience and knowledge of computer software for word-processing, database management, etc. Demonstrate proficiency in use of editing and formatting options included in word processing software.
6. Ability to learn/use other software related to translations, such as Adobe Acrobat
7. Self-motivated with ability to meet deadlines.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Work is considered sedentary. Position requires work indoors in a normal office environment.
